I receive the first letter from Martina on November 12th, 2005. She’s a nice, interesting, and friendly girl. She has written 6 letters to me, I feel I’m very lucky, because not every of my classmate has such a good and patient eapl. I shared many things like, family, Chinese New Year, school, and pet with her, and she also did. I hope we can become much closer friend in the future!
My epal Martina
My epal’s name is Martina; I can call her Tina, too. She lives in Steyr, that's a city in Upperaustria. She is 15 years old. (Her birthday is on 13th of July.) She doesn’t have any brothers or sisters; she’s the only child in her family. She has a pet called "SWEETY".
School
Martina’s school is the BRG Steyr, it's a grammar school. It lasts 8 years to finish it with a-levels, but you can also leave after 4 years and join an other school. (The ages of the students at her school is from 10-18)The school starts at 7:40 in the morning and it ends at 1:15 p.m. or at 15:25 p.m. They are having 6 lessons till 1:15 p.m. and if they have school in the afternoon too, they have an half an hour lunch break, before then starting working until 15:25 p.m.
They have to study Math, German, English, Latin or French (you can choose
Between these two, she chose Latin), biology, physics, chemistry, geography, history, art, music and physical education. Then we have some special subjects called ARTE (there you learn how to present and how to make a speech and so on) and GEOPOL (that’s why they write the e-mail to us, so they can learn about the geography, history, politic and economy of specific areas in the world). Nobody has to have GEOPOL, you can choose between GEOPOL, special MATH or SCIENCE.
Special festival
Christmas in Austria is a bit special. Martina doesn’t get the presents in the morning of the 25th of December. On Christmas Eve, in the evening of the 24th, she is having dinner, in her family, at about 9 o'clock, (but that's different!) she is getting the presents. The gifts and the Christmas tree are in a room which is closed from 22nd or 23rd till 24th evening. Everybody here knows Santa Clause, but the little children believe that the "Christ kind", the infant Jesus or "Christmas child" brings the gifts.
Caneval and "Fasching" mean the same festival, Fasching is the Austrian word and Caneval is German. This festivity is in February and the historical reason for it is to banish the (bad) winter (demons). People dress up in different, funny costumes and then they celebrate, go to parties or make processions. People are drinking a lot of alcohol during these days
